How to play UnderCover Party
A social deduction game for 3 to 20 players. Everyone gets a secret word, except they do not all get the same one, and one player gets no word at all. Here is the whole game.
Setting up
One player creates a room and the others join with a code, or you drop straight into a public lobby. The host chooses how many Undercovers play and whether Mr. White is in. Everything else is dealt by the server, so nobody has to run the game by hand.
A round, step by step
1Pick your card
Round one opens with a face-down deck, one card per player. The card you take binds a role and a word to your seat, and it is first come, first served.
2Give a clue
In turn order, describe your word without saying it. Say too much and you hand it to the Undercover. Say too little and the table turns on you.
3Discuss
Once the clues are in, the table opens up. Argue, defend your clue, point at the one that sounded off. This is where the game is really played.
4Vote
Everyone votes. The player with the most votes is eliminated and their role is revealed. Then the next round begins.
Mr. White's last chance
Mr. White never receives a word at all and has to bluff from whatever everyone else says. If Mr. White is voted out, they get one guess at the Civilians' word. Guess right and Mr. White steals the win outright, having just been eliminated.
The roles
- Civilian
- Knows the common word. Most of the table is Civilian.
- Undercover
- Knows a word close to the Civilians' word, but not the same one, and does not know they are the odd one out.
- Mr. White
- Knows no word at all, and has to work out the topic from what everyone else says.
How each side wins
- Civilians
- Win once every Undercover and Mr. White has been eliminated, provided no Mr. White guessed the word correctly on the way out.
- Undercover
- Wins by surviving. Once the deceivers match the Civilians in number, the Civilians can no longer out-vote them.
- Mr. White
- Wins by guessing the Civilians' word correctly after being voted out.
Optional extras
Hosts can add two more roles. The Decoy scores a bonus for being voted out in the very first round, which turns a losing position into a gamble worth taking. The Judge breaks a tied vote and decides who goes.
